WH GATECRASHER POSES AS ALUMNI CHEERLEADER??? Heads are said to be rolling among the Secret Service after Tareq and Michaele Salahi showed up uninvited to a White House state dinner last week. But that is strictly a story for Fox News and the Clinton News Network to handle, and has nothing to do with sports. Well suddenly, it is kind of a sports story, because this may not be the first party that Michaele has crashed. It is now said that Salahi appeared as part of the Washington Redskins Alumni heerleading squad at a game earlier this year. That would be fine except (a) none of her colleagues seemed to remember her and (b) she did not know any of the cheers. Salahi's story was that she was a cheerleader in 1991 under an assumed maiden name of Missy Holt. She was said to had become a dues paying alumni member in 2005, and appeared at games without suspicion that year as well as in 2007. While scratching their heads, the cheerleading alumni did not further investigate Salahi's credentials under she and her husband made international headlines at the White House last week. Now the association has scratched Michaele's name from ever being involved in the organization. Still, one might have to admit that Salahi can impersonate a cheerleader better than Jim Zorn can pretend to be an NFL coach...




JESPER SAYS ELIN SHOULD USE DRIVER NEXT TIME

The most damning condemnation from one of Tiger Woods' fellow PGA players has come out - and it is from none other than Jesper Parnevik, who once employed Elin Nordegren as a nanny when he introduced her to Tiger. Parnevik says that he and his wife now regret getting the two together and wishes that he could apologize, noting that he thought that Tiger Woods was a 'much better guy than he is'. Parnevik then suggest that if there is a next time Elin catches her husband cheating, that she pull out a driver instead of a 3-iron. Even if the two end up in divorce court, I have a feeling Elin lands on her feet, early reports have Nordegren in line for somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 million per pre-nups if she walks now.

WAS DONAGHY JUST THE TIP OF THE BETTING ICEBERG

This story has been lurking for almost a week now, and I did hear it speculated on one national sports talk show last night - so it's worth at least a mention. A source close to a former professional gambler known as 'Jimmy The Sheep', an associate who served time along with Tim Donaghy in the 2008 NBA betting scandal, says that there is much, much more to be told about this tale. According to the source, 13 NBA officials in all were involved in the scandal, 10 of whom are still active in the Association. The source claims through phone records that five of the referees were considered dependable, with Donaghy being the kingpin of the operation, noting that the correct side covered in a whopping 78 percent of games in which Donaghy worked. One example in the story involved a 2006 Celtics/76ers game in Philadelphia, Donaghy was said to have spread information about the officiating assignments as well as injury reports to the gambler, a 1 1/2 point favorite that night, the Celtics would go on to win that game by 20. Jimmy the Sheep pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transmit wagering information in connection with Donaghy and did 15 months in federal prison - he is currently working on (what else) a tell-all book and will not release any further details until it is released.





IT ALMOST WAS FIGHT ON FOR REAL

A game that in recent years had gotten ABC national college on the last weekend of the season this year was reduced to being shown on Fox Sports Net, and for 59 minutes was one of one of dullest UCLA-USC game in years. But that was before U-Clan coach Rick Neuheisel called a timeout after USC had taken a knee. Coach Pete Carroll responds by having his QB throw deep, leading to the final score in the Trojans 28-7 win and leading to a near-brawl as the two squads started to come towards the middle of the field. Law enforcement was then brought in to make sure no further fireworks erupted after the final gun. Lots of classy coaches lately in the pro/college football world - Pete, Neuheisel, Jim Harbaugh, McDaniels, Belichick, Rex Ryan, Tom Cable, New Mexico's football coach fighting with one of his assistants, Hawaii's coach making homophobic comments - Mike Leach and Bob Stoops rubbing it on occasion in the Big XII, have I left anyone out, it's become worse pandemic than H1N1...





TIGER WOODS - OUT OF BOUNDS

Today we may find out that not even Tiger Woods and wife Elin Nordegren are above the law, and that not everything is perfect in Camelot. The gossip site TMZ is reporting that Tiger's 'facial injuries' were inflicted not by crashing into a tree/fire hydrant in his own driveway - but by Mrs. Woods after confronting him over a tabloid report earlier this week that he was with another woman - and the timing of this on the heels of the National Enquirer story speaks to beyond being a mere coincidence. As everyone knows, Tiger historically keeps his private life as under wraps as anyone, living in an Orlando area gated community with a constant security presence. Could we be seeing mugshots by the end of the day???

EARLIER BS STORY - ELIN USED GOLF CLUB TO GET TIGER OUT: Way too many holes in that story, and why would Tiger be leaving his house at 2:25 AM??? Anything else fishy with someone getting more seriously injured trying to get out of a driveway than NASCAR drivers barrel-rolling at 180 MPH???



LA TIMES SPORTSWRITER FOUND DEAD: The newspaper reports that Mike Penner, 52, was found dead in his home in what they say is a suspected suicide. Penner made headlines in 2007 by disclosing transsexualism and by writing under the name of Christine Daniels. When writing about the change Penner wrote 'It has taken more than 40 years, a million tears and hundreds of hours of soul-wrenching therapy'. By last year the writer had quietly gone back to using the Mike Penner byline.


BOB STOOPS ALREADY ON FLIGHT TO SOUTH BEND??? We all know that Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, and Jim Harbaugh have vehemently denied any interest whatsoever in the upcoming possible Notre Dame coaching vacancy, while Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly just quietly says he pays no attention to Silly Season rumors. That's no news - would you expect any coach to say anything else and risk losing the respect of their current team, potential recruits, and boosters, while risking their job status at their current place of employment??? With all that said, make no mistake that the names just mentioned remain prime candidates for Notre Dame, and with team's regular season's now ending they are very much in play. For instance, CBS reports scuttlebutt during their post-game show tonight that Bob Stoops may be on a private plane for South Bend as I speak, that would be just hours after an impressive 27-0 whitewash over rival Oklahoma State in the Bedlam Series. Jim Harbaugh wouldn't even go that far if asked for an interview, as Notre Dame visits Stanford tonight - hell, they could terminate Weis and hire Harbaugh right on the field during the post-game...

WOULD BRIAN KELLY BE BETTER HIRE: Writer argues that Stoops is not an offensive genius (disagree) and his career is on a downward path after 7-5 season (also disagree, OU was decimatd by injury). He does make good points that Kelly is on the rise and that buying out Stoops $30 million contract would be expensive even by Notre Dame standards.


ROSS VERBA FACES ANOTHER BAD CHECK/GAMBLING RAP... Talking about the former NFL lineman who went off the deep end a few years back has always been risky business for yours truly, after reporting on one of his Vegas escapades and bad business ventures some time ago, this site mysteriously crashed for several hours - coincidence??? Now Verba has been charged for writing three bad checks to a Vegas casino in January, 2008. In 2007 Verba was also arrested on bad check chargers over $50,000 in markers from another Vegas establishment.




IS JOSH MCDANIELS ACT GETTING OLD???

Big and much needed win for the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football, never mind that the otherwise impressive win was marred by some early penalties which stalled a drive, followed by an expletive-laden rant towards his players on the sideline which unfortunately got aired by the NFL Network. But that may not even be McDaniel's worst crime of the week, as he allegedly taunted Shawne Merriman along with other San Diego Chargers players during pre-game warmups last Sunday, claiming that his team 'owned them' - that apparently inspired the Chargers bad enough to deliver an embarrassing 32-3 butt-whipping on their division rivals. But others around the league are also wondering just who the hell McDaniels' thinks he is, with one player suggesting that those taunted should have the right to retaliate with fists should they ever be verbally disrespected before a game...
